What Are You Asking God to Bless That He Never Asked You to Build?

We often ask God to bless our plans, but how often do we ask whether those plans are truly aligned with His direction? This reflection explores ambition, discernment, surrender and the difference between seeking God’s guidance and asking Him to approve decisions we have already made.

What if some of our frustration does not come from a lack of opportunity, but from trying to make something succeed that was never ours to pursue?

We often pray for open doors, progress, favour and success.

We ask God to bless the business.

Bless the career.

Bless the relationship.

Bless the plan.

Bless the move.

But how often do we stop to ask a different question?

Did God actually ask me to build this?

There is a difference between inviting God into our plans and allowing Him to shape them.

Ambition is not the enemy

Ambition can be a good thing.

It can push us to grow, take responsibility, solve problems and pursue excellence.

The danger begins when ambition becomes louder than discernment.

When we become emotionally attached to a particular outcome, it becomes easy to interpret every opportunity as confirmation and every delay as resistance.

Sometimes we are so determined to make something work that we stop asking whether it should work at all.

That is where frustration can begin.

Not every difficult season means we should quit.

Not every closed door means the direction is wrong.

But not every struggle should automatically be interpreted as something we must force our way through either.

Sometimes wisdom requires us to pause and examine the foundation of what we are pursuing.

Are you seeking direction or approval?

There is a subtle difference between asking God, “What should I do?” and saying, “This is what I have decided to do, please bless it.”

One is surrender.

The other can become negotiation.

The first leaves room for redirection.

The second often looks for confirmation.

This is difficult because surrender can require us to release something we genuinely want.

A business idea.

A career path.

A relationship.

A location.

An opportunity.

A version of success we have already imagined.

But faith is not only trusting God to give us what we desire.

Sometimes faith is trusting Him enough to let go of what He is not asking us to carry.

Success without alignment can still feel empty

Something can appear successful on the outside and still leave us unsettled within.

The numbers may grow.

The recognition may come.

The opportunity may expand.

But if the pursuit is disconnected from purpose, success can become exhausting.

We may spend years protecting something that was never meant to define us.

We may keep adding effort because stopping feels like failure.

We may continue because we have already invested too much to reconsider.

But wisdom is not measured by how long we can hold on.

Sometimes it is measured by whether we are willing to listen again.

The better prayer

Perhaps the question is not simply, “Will God bless this?”

Perhaps the better question is, “Is this aligned with what God is asking of me?”

That question changes the posture.

It shifts us from control to trust.

From performance to obedience.

From forcing outcomes to seeking clarity.

So what are you asking God to bless right now?

Is it something He placed in your heart?

Or is it something you chose first and asked Him to approve later?

Perhaps the better prayer is not:

“God, bless what I am building.”

Perhaps it is:

“God, help me recognise what You actually want me to build.”
